To get the full value of a sponsorship, a company should send technical representatives to participate and interact with attendees. In many cases, a hackathon can be like a weekend long interview with potential hiring candidates. It also provides an opportunity for current employees to work outside of their ‘bubble’ and learn about new tools and libraries from fellow participants.
